Website Speed and Performance Audit

Nine Reasons You Should Care About This

(if you want to have any clients)

First Impressions Matter

Speed counts! Your website visitors need a positive first impression but a slow-loader will often see them leave without bothering to wait for your great content. Especially important if you use your website to get new clients.

Better Ranking

Search engines (esp. Google) place high importance on fast and optimised websites. If your’s is too slow to load, Google and others will penalise you, meaning any SEO will count for nothing.

Reduce The Bounce

No-one has time to wait for a website to load in more than a couple of seconds – they’ll ‘bounce’ and leave. Optimised speed means a better user experience when navigating your site (and not just your home page).

Mobile Is Key

Over half of all web traffic is mobile. Speed optimisation for smaller screens is crucial for ensuring your site appears, when patience is even shorter than normal (and connections are sometimes slower).

Conversion Rates

Did you know every one second delay in loading can negatively impact conversions by up to 7% per second? Of course, if you’re not fussed about having any clients…

Unfavourable Comparisons

Imagine a potential client is looking for a new provider. You and your main competitor are on their website hit list to visit. Now imagine theirs loads at lightning speed and yours is still loading. What happens next?

Stability

Alongside speed, Google also prioritises optimisation and stability. A poorly performing site will be penalised, even if the initial load is quick. Ever got frustrated by sites that ‘jump around’? Yeah, that’s what we’re talking about.

Brand Reputation

A site that loads slowly, especially on the content pages, will leave a bad impression. At best you’ll be giving unprofessional vibes to whoever’s checking you out!

Accessibility

It’s estimated that one in five people use assistive technology to browse websites. Can you afford to exclude 20% of your potential clients when your site loads too slowly for the tech they’re using?

So Why Not Just Add In A Speed Plugin?

In most cases this can help in the short-term. The thing is, these plugins are only as good as the instructions they’re given. If you’re comfortable dealing with minified CSS and deferring Javascript execution, work away! Even if you do understand those things, do you have the time to work out what your site needs?

Also, did we mention that there’s no single plugin that will do everything a site needs better than specific optimisation practices? This means you’ll need more than one plugin to get the best results. More plugins = more opportunities for things to break!

Let Us Do The Heavy Lifting

Graphic showing brightly coloured circles and wavy lines, emphasizing a journey go from left to right.

To properly optimise your site for speed, you need to take the time to test every single page not just once, but four times*. So if you have just five pages, that’s twenty separate tests and test reports to wade through.

And that’s just the start. Once you’ve tested the pages, you then need to navigate through the reams of incomprehensible ‘recommendations’ made by your speed testing programs. First Contentful Paint anyone?

After you’ve spent time researching and understanding what all the jargon actually means, it’s just a question of implementing the required changes (do you have the time for that?) on ALL your pages individually and then… yeah, you get to test every page four times all over again surprised

*Why Four Times?

Best practice dictates using at least two different speed monitor services to compensate for bias. On top of that, every page should also be tested for optimum connection and what’s called a ‘throttled’ connection – which simulates a typical mobile experience.

Isn’t speed dictated by a hosting provider though?

Yes and no. It depends! Generally, your hosting quality and chosen package (if available) will have an impact on the speed of your website. While it is one of many factors in the mix, unfortunately it’s not the biggest one. If you have hosting on servers that are optimised for the type of platform (e.g. WordPress) and operate a ‘shared-load’ server environment (plus a few other helpful bits), then you’ve done all you can from the hosting side of things.

Those of you that have hosting with Get That Website Online are fully covered and then some!

The Anatomy Of Speed and Performance

Most speed testing relies on two key indicators: Performance and Structure.

Performance is about how quickly your site loads to a meaningful result so that the user experience is as good as it can be. It will usually cover things to do with the efficiency of the visual and clickable elements on a page. A good analogy would be to think of Performance as the clothes you choose to wear and whether they are suitable for the activity you are doing.

Structure is about the technical aspects of a web page, including coding and other ‘hidden’ processes. It will usually cover things to do with how the page has been put together and whether background activities are stable and optimised. To continue the analogy above, if Performance is about your clothing, Structure is about your body underneath – is it being taken care of?

Although you want both scores to be high, some testing services place a slightly higher weighting on the Performance score to give an overall grading for a site. This is partly because Structure items often have a longer-term impact on site performance. So you can dress for the occasion, but your long-term prospects might be limited if you don’t treat your body well!

What if the site was only recently built?

Even recently built sites might need tweaking. It will largely depend on the quality of the build and whether your developer or designer cut any corners anywhere with optimisation or build. There are so many different factors to think about, and with the proliferation of ‘free’ website builder tech (HUGE warning flag about those), speed and performance is not guaranteed.

Your developer or designer may very well be amazing and have done everything brilliantly, but websites don’t stay static for long. Things get updated, moved around, added to. The platform, theme and plugins will also have updates that mean things change at least monthly, which can affect your site’s speed and performance.

If speed and performance are crucial to your site fulfilling its role in your business (any kind of lead generation or online sales for example), ideally you will be checking each page every month with a performance testing tool (for both mobile and desktop) to stay on top of things.

What You Get For Your Money

Human-generated PDF Report

Your PDF report will be specific to your site and the pages it contains. It will give you an at-a-glance traffic light system to see the areas that need work and a plain-speaking explanation of what needs to be done to fix things.

Priorities Sorted

Assuming there are any fixes that need doing, we’ll prioritise these for you according to which have the biggest impact. This means you can spend your money or time in the most efficient way!

No-strings Quote

We’ll include a quote to get any fixes done for you, but there’s no obligation to use us for this. It will just be information supplied that you can use or ignore as you see fit! Naturally, should you use us, we’ll retest everything after the fixes to show you what’s improved.

Built By/Hosted With/Got A Maintenance Plan With Us Already?

Well first up, your site will have been optimised during the build, so you’re already ahead of the game! However, if we find anything during the Audit that should have been taken care of during the original build, we’ll fix it for free. Plus, if you ask us to make any fixes that aren’t connected to the original build we’ll discount the Audit cost against that invoice too smile

Your hosting service will be on the right servers for the type of site you have (we mainly deal with WordPress but can handle Linux too), but if we didn’t build your site, then we won’t have knowledge of how it was constructed and whether it was properly optimised by the original developer or designer.

Our Maintenance Plans cover either Basic Maintenance which is all about ensuring all the moving parts are up to date and working as they should, or Maintenance Plus which is about also making tweaks to content for you during any given month. Many of you already know how responsive we are for both this and if things break! We don’t charge much for this service as it is more about getting something done regularly to take it off your to-do list.

Speed and Performance testing and maintenance is a separate service that ensures things look and work the way they should in lightning fast time, providing an amazing end user experience. It requires a higher skill base than for our other services and is more labour-intensive and demanding than the Maintenance services, so stands alone as a separate offering.

What About The Free Audit Services Out There?

It’s true, there are companies offering to provide a ‘speed report’ for free… I think you know what’s coming! These services are supplied as a ‘Lead Magnet’ for the companies concerned, where they’re more interested in getting your email address so they can upsell you to another service.

While you may get some value from these things, you definitely won’t get a full report with an easy-to-understand layout and explanations that we offer, or the transparent quote for fixing any issues.

Hey there, I’m Ginette!

I run Get That Website Online, (part of The Get That Gang) where our motto is “Sorting Your Online Sh*t Out”. Essentially I’m the kind of business friend you want in your corner if you and Tech are uneasy allies!

I’ve been helping clients create and get the best out of their websites since 2015. In that time, I’ve worked on hundreds of websites and I’m lucky enough to still take care of many of those through my hosting and maintenance services.

I call myself a website designer rather than a developer as I’m not a coding expert, but I do know my way around the bits that relate to speed and performance. Plus I have an eye for great website design and a skill set that suits what needs doing!

I’d love to help you get the most out of your website, and if you’d like a chat because you’re not sure or if you’d like a chat about getting your website to the point of actually being a useful asset in your business, please feel free to get in touch.

You can email me on: hello@getthatwebsiteonline.com

Does your website load pretty quickly already?

You might have loaded up your own website recently on your browser – maybe you visit it quite often – and you think it loads pretty quickly. So why would you need a speed and performance audit?

There are a few reasons why your own website might load up quickly: if you looked on the browser you usually use for everyday internet, there’s a very good chance that browser has shown you a ‘saved’ version of the site instead of getting the latest version ‘live’ from your hosting. This is known as caching, which is designed to save you time. This is great, except… Not all your visitors will have either visited your site before or even have brilliant internet connection.

Poor internet means even a slightly slow site will take an age to load (typically can mobile devices also exacerbate any issues) and people will not wait! Also, Google will test your website on what it calls a ‘throttled’ connection (it mimics poor connection speeds) and if you don’t do well there, this will impact their ranking of your site.
